Lightning kills KZN teenager 18 November 2011 | Sapa

JOHANNESBURG - Lightning killed a teenage girl and seriously injured a farm worker in Mangosuthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal, premier Zweli Mkhize said on Friday.

He said the 13-year-old girl was identified as Ntethelelo Khehla Khaba, and the injured farmworker as Bonginkosi Shongwe.

A clinic and police station was destroyed in the same thunderstorm on Thursday night.

The premier's spokesman Ndabezinhle Sibiya said windows shattered, houses collapsed and trees were uprooted. The Bilanyoni and Dumbe areas were also affected. A disaster management team was dispatched to the area to assist those in need.

Mkhize said he would visit the affected areas on Saturday to assess the damage and speed up recovery efforts.
